Types of membership

MIECAT offers two types of membership to affiliates:

Professional Counselling membership is designed to aid practicing workers and researchers in the Experiential & Creative Arts Therapy field while Student Association membership provides a support and social network for past and present students. Each offers specific benefits to members meeting entry requirements.

Professional Counselling

What is it?

MIECAT Professional Couselling members are a motivated group of qualified field workers and researchers with a keen interest in Experiential & Creative Arts Therapy. Members are invited to attend regular meetings to discuss issues from the philosophical to the highly practical and generally network with other like-minded souls. In addition, members receive a number of important benefits including full voting rights at the MIECAT AGM, discounts on MIECAT Professional Development (PD) workshops, access to self-care groups, access to individual and small group supervision, and eligibility for PD points that count toward membership to the Register of the Psychotherapists and Counsellors Federation of Australia (PACFA).

NOTE: PACFA is the regulatory body for counsellors and therapists in Australia to which only accredited organisations may hold membership. Individual therapists and counsellors can only apply for entry to the PACFA Register via member organisations, which are in turn responsible for the training and ongoing support of their affiliated, practising field workers. As such MIECAT is responsible for the ethical practice of its Professional Counselling members and MIECAT Ethical Guidelines and Procedures are supplied to these members on admission.

Who can apply?

Professional Counselling membership is available to candidates holding at least MIECAT Master of Arts (by Supervision or Research) level qualifications or an equivalent qualification as approved by the MIECAT Executive Committee.

Additional requirements?

Professional Counselling members who are placed on the PACFA register are required to earn 15 PD points each year (1 hour earns 1 point) and 10 hours supervision. To this end MIECAT provides opportunities for the earning of PD points via various PACFA-accredited programmes, self care groups, and individual or small group supervision.

How much does it cost?

Professional Counselling membership is AUD$65 per annum, of which MIECAT pays a levy of $35 per year for each full member to PACFA. Fees are due on July 1st each year.

Student Association

What is it?

The MIECAT Student Association is an affiliation of past and present students who meet bi-monthly to attend presentations, workshops, discussions or just socialise with others in the Experiential & Creative Arts Therapy field. In addition to being a forum for relevant information the Student Association can assist members in gaining employment, help with professional registration and provide opportunities for networking as well as support structures. Members receive an electronic newsletter, published three times a year by the MIECAT Executive Committee, outlining upcoming events and providing contact details. The Student Association is always keen to welcome students both new and old, so join up and enjoy the sense of community.

Who can apply?

Membership to the Student Association is available to all currently enrolled students, and to all past students who have completed at least the Graduate Diploma.

How much does it cost?

Student Association membership is AUD$30 per annum, to be paid upon attendence of the first event each calendar year.
